Volotea Baggage Allowance 2026: Free Bag, Priority & Fees

Every Volotea fare in 2026 — including the cheapest Standard ticket — includes one free small bag of 40 × 30 × 20 cm (15.7 × 11.8 × 7.9 in) that must fit under the seat in front of you. That single line settles most of the panicked pre-flight googling, so it deserves a timestamp: checked against Volotea's official baggage page in July 2026.

Everything larger is paid. The 55 × 40 × 25 cm overhead cabin bag rides only on Priority Boarding (from ~€9), a Megavolotea membership or a Combo fare bundle. Checked bags of 10, 20 or 25 kg start at ~€9, ~€14 and ~€19 online, and climb steeply at the desk and the gate.

Volotea doesn't use the American term "personal item" — its official copy says "small bag", and the published size is 40 × 30 × 20 cm, about 24 litres. Volotea's own suggestions for what fits: a compact backpack, a handbag, a laptop case, "or even a large waist pack", which is the most Volotea sentence ever published.

Weight is a two-page story. The consumer baggage page prints no standalone weight figure for the small bag; the partners page caps it at 10 kg, and when carried together with the paid trolley the combined weight of both pieces may not exceed 10 kg — going over costs ~€65 per item per flight. For a bag of folded clothes, 10 kg is effectively no limit.

The practical takeaway: packed normally, a bag that truly keeps to 40 × 30 × 20 covers a long weekend; add a compression system that presses the folded clothes flat and it covers a week. The free size — not the paid trolley — is the number worth building a bag around.

Yes — and this is the single most expensive thing to get wrong on Volotea. Since 8 June 2022, the overhead trolley is no longer part of any base fare; only the 40 × 30 × 20 small bag flies free. The 55 × 40 × 25 cm (21.7 × 15.7 × 9.8 in) cabin bag requires Priority Boarding, sold from ~€9 and addable any time up to 2 h 30 min before departure.

There are two other doors to the same bin: a Megavolotea membership (~€79.99 per 12 months, which includes the 10 kg cabin bag; the ~€159.99 Plus tier adds priority boarding, and a full bin sends a member's trolley to the hold free) and the Combo or Combo Plus fare bundles chosen at booking. There is no standalone "cabin bag only" product; the trolley always rides on one of those three.

The trap is assuming it's included, because on most airlines it once was. Turn up trolley-in-hand without Priority and the gate charges ~€65 per item per flight — roughly seven times the ~€9 that would have covered the same bag.

One number repeats through Volotea's fee schedule: ~€65. An unpaid trolley at the gate is ~€65 per item per flight. Exceeding the 10 kg combined hand-baggage weight is ~€65 per item per flight. A bag that won't drop into the sizer gets gate-checked in the same ~€65 class. Optimism, invoiced.

Checked bags use dynamic "from" pricing, buyable up to 2.5 hours before departure: 10 kg from ~€9 online but ~€45 at the desk and ~€65 at the gate; 20 kg from ~€14 online, ~€75 at the desk; 25 kg from ~€19 online, ~€75 at the desk. Excess weight runs ~€12 per extra kilo to a hard 32 kg per bag; sports gear and instruments are ~€60 per flight. Up to 5 pieces or 50 kg per passenger.

The arithmetic is consistent: the same 10 kg bag costs ~€9 online or ~€65 at the gate — about 7×. Every fee shrinks the earlier you decide, and shrinks to zero if the free 40 × 30 × 20 bag is packed well enough to be the only bag.

Moderately strict — less notorious than Ryanair or Wizz Air, but real. Gate agents regularly use metal sizers, wheels and handles included; if the bag doesn't drop in, it's checked at the ~€65-class gate fee. Weight checks on the 10 kg combined limit are reported mostly when the flight is full or a bag looks bulky — enforcement intensity scales with how badly the bins are about to overflow.

The pattern in 2025–26 traveller reports: the under-seat 40 × 30 × 20 bag is essentially never challenged when it visibly fits under the seat, while unpaid trolleys are the target. Unlike some ground handlers elsewhere, there's no public evidence of a per-bag staff commission — the deterrent is the flat ~€65.

Reports are also inconsistent, which is the problem with budgeting on leniency. A packed bag that stays inside 40 × 30 × 20 cm clears the frame on every load factor — arithmetic, not luck. Megavolotea members get the one soft landing: full bins send their trolley to the hold free.

Since 8 June 2022, "hand luggage" on Volotea has meant under-seat only — yet 2025–26 third-party guides still print a free 55 cm trolley on every fare. That's four years out of date, and precisely the confusion a ~€65 gate fee monetises.

Two more zombie numbers circulate. The paid trolley's published depth is now 25 cm — 55 × 40 × 25 on both volotea.com and its partners page — but many guides still carry the older 55 × 40 × 20. And at least one popular guide still prints a 35 × 20 × 20 "personal item" — that's the pre-2022 small-bag size, gone from Volotea's own pages for four years.

The rule for any baggage fact: trust the carrier's page, or a page that shows its dates. Not the trolley, no. The EU's revised air-passenger-rights rules — approved by the European Parliament on 7 July 2026, 646 votes to 12, and given the Council's final green light on 13 July — guarantee every passenger a free under-seat personal item of at least 40 × 30 × 15 cm, applying from roughly mid-2027. The overhead bag is not made flatly free: airlines must display a hand-luggage-inclusive fare by default, but may keep selling cheaper fares without it. Opt-out pricing survives.

Here's the quietly funny part: Volotea is future-proof by accident. It has offered 40 × 30 × 20 since June 2022 — five centimetres more depth than the coming legal floor. Ryanair had to enlarge its free bag in 2025 to clear that floor; Volotea just shrugged.
