It must fit completely under the seat in front of you, without pressure or force. One comes free with every fare, including the cheapest Basic ticket, per passenger, per direction. The number worth memorizing is 8 — the depth. 18 in of length and 14 of height are reasonably generous; the 8 in (20.3 cm) wall is where soft bags go to die, because a stuffed daypack bulges in exactly that direction.

Remarkably, there is no weight limit on the personal item. Frontier caps its paid carry-on at 35 lb but publishes no scale for the free bag — if you can lift it and it fits the box, it flies.

Yes. Every Frontier fare includes exactly one free personal item — and on Basic, that's the whole allowance. Basic is personal-item-only by design; the Economy, Premium and Business bundles introduced with May 2024's "The New Frontier" overhaul add the carry-on and more, at bundle prices.

What counts as a personal item? Frontier's own examples: a purse, a tote, a laptop bag, a briefcase, a diaper bag, a kids' backpack. So yes — a backpack absolutely counts, and it's the highest-capacity thing on that list by a comfortable margin.

The fine print is in the verb: it counts if it fits. The sizer doesn't classify bags, it measures them. A "small" backpack that bulges to 9 in deep is a ~$99 carry-on with sentimental value. An 18 × 14 × 8-compliant one is free, every time, on every Frontier flight.

Frontier's paid carry-on measures 24 × 16 × 10 in (61 × 41 × 25 cm) — again including handles, wheels and straps — and, unusually for a US carrier, it carries a hard 35 lb (15.9 kg) weight limit. It's never free on Basic: expect ~$39–49 added during booking, ~$50–69 at online check-in, and up to ~$99 at the airport, priced dynamically per passenger, per direction.

The Economy bundle includes a carry-on (plus a standard seat and no change fees), and Frontier periodically runs $0 Economy Bundle promotions. If your trip genuinely needs the overhead bin, booking time is when to buy it — the same bin never gets cheaper later.

But notice the inversion: the paid bag is weight-capped and the free one isn't. On Frontier, the free under-seat bag is the only bag legally allowed to out-weigh everything else you bring. That's printed policy, not a trick — and it's the allowance worth engineering around.

Strictest in the country — and since Spirit Airlines permanently shut down on May 2, 2026, the title is uncontested. Metal sizers stand at Frontier boarding gates (and some TSA checkpoints), agents actively send plump-looking bags to them, and there's no grace period for "a little over".

The incentives are documented, not folklore. After viral TikToks in 2023, Frontier confirmed to Newsweek that it pays gate agents a $10 commission per oversized bag charged at the gate.
