Breeze Airways Personal Item Size 2026: Free Bag & Fees

Every Breeze fare in 2026 — including the cheapest No Flex — includes one free personal item of 17 × 13 × 8 in (43 × 33 × 20 cm) that has to stow under the seat in front of you. Breeze publishes no weight limit for it. That single sentence is the whole free allowance, verified against Breeze's official pages in July 2026.

Breeze's own examples of a personal item: a purse, a briefcase, a small backpack, a laptop bag, a pillow or a blanket. One official quirk: bulkhead rows have no seat in front of them, so bulkhead passengers stow the personal item in the overhead bin — the airline's exception, written into the rules, not a workaround.

The number itself is a small miracle of stability. Around it, the carry-on shrank, the airport fee standardized and a whole fare tier got invented — and through all of it, the free item's three digits sat still.

Only if your fare bundle says so. Nicer and Nicest (the premium cabin flies as Breeze Ascent) include the overhead carry-on; on No Flex and Nice it's a paid add-on. The current published limit is 22 × 14 × 9 in (56 × 36 × 23 cm) including wheels and handles, with a 35 lb (~16 kg) maximum — Breeze is one of the few US carriers that publishes, and can actually enforce, a carry-on weight limit.

The price is dynamic: Breeze's official Bag Pricing page is literally a quote tool where you enter your route to learn your number. Most guides land at ~$40 each way when added at booking, more if added later, and a flat $75 at the airport.

One caution for cross-checking: Breeze quietly trimmed the carry-on from 24 × 14 × 10 in, and several 2026 guides still print the old size. The 22 × 14 × 9 figure is the official one — verified July 2026.

Yes — "small backpack" is on Breeze's own examples list, right alongside a purse, a laptop bag, a pillow and a blanket. Under 17 × 13 × 8 in, it flies for exactly $0. We'd note, with professional satisfaction, that a backpack with a pillow strapped to it is composed entirely of items Breeze lists as acceptable.

The catch is the word "one." A purse plus a backpack must be consolidated into a single item, or carry-on charges apply. And a pet in its carrier officially counts as your personal item — the chihuahua or the bag, not both.

The Contract of Carriage does exempt a short list from the count: a camera, an umbrella, your coat, reading material, food for the flight, one duty-free bag, and infant or assistive items. The sandwich flies free even when the tote doesn't.

Here's the arithmetic under the branding: on Nice, the nice thing about your carry-on is the ~$40 fee, which becomes a Seriously Nice $75 if you wait until the airport. The fare names are a compliment; the ladder is an invoice.

For anything up to a week, we'd skip the ladder: the cheapest carry-on on Breeze is the one you never buy, because the free 17 × 13 × 8 item swallowed the whole trip. Getting a week into that box is a compression problem — and compression problems are the reason our backpack exists.

The official line is unambiguous: "Airport Team Members make the final decision regarding bags" — including charging your personal item as a carry-on if it's too large. And the 17 × 13 × 8 in frame is a tighter box than American's 18 × 14 × 8, so an overstuffed bag that cleared your last airline's sizer can fail Breeze's. Breeze can also weigh carry-ons: the 35 lb limit is published, which is rare for a US airline.

Actual trip reports run milder. Travelers describe personal-item enforcement as fairly relaxed, with crews mostly tracking who paid for a carry-on rather than measuring under-seat bags.

But "usually relaxed" is a mood, not a policy, and the person holding the final decision doesn't consult your trip report. What holds on every shift is a bag that's still inside the published number once packed — at that point there's nothing left to decide.

Memorize one figure: any bag added at the airport — or via Breeze's text-based support crew, officially titled the "Guest Empowerment Team" — costs a flat $75, roughly double the ~$40 the same carry-on costs at booking. There is no call center to argue with; Breeze support is text-first, and a bag added by an empowered agent is $75, empowered or not. An oversized personal item at the gate gets charged as a carry-on, up to that same $75.

Checked bags are dynamic by route: the first runs ~$50 at booking, the second ~$60, and prices climb the later you add. Overweight (51–99 lb) adds a flat +$75 on top of the bag price; oversize (63–80 linear in) adds another +$75; past 99 lb or 80 linear inches the bag is simply refused.
